I’ve written many times about my love for Costco. They pay their employees better than most companies, and I even did an intensive shopping comparison to prove that Costco prices are almost always cheaper than you’ll find elsewhere.
So when I came across an article listing five items you should NOT buy at warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club, I naturally had to check it out.
Below you’ll find the five items on their list and my thoughts on each.
Books, CDs, and DVDs
Whenever I’m at Costco I do a quick scan of the books and Blu-rays and I have found a good deal from time to time, but overall you’re better off getting this kind of stuff from Amazon where prices are usually cheaper and you can have it delivered right to your doorstep.

Condiments, Sunscreen, and Perishables
Savvy shoppers know they can save money by buying in bulk. The price per unit is almost always cheaper when you buy a larger container, but you won’t be saving if it goes bad before you can use it all. Only buy perishables in bulk if you’re sure you’ll use them all.
My kids are no longer in the diaper phase but when they were we usually bought diapers from Target. It was more convenient than Costco at the time and I thought the prices were better, but when I did my price comparison article diapers (technically pull-ups) were on the list and Costco’s price blew the other stores away.
One thing to keep in mind…you might be able to find a better deal at Target or the supermarket if you can combine coupons with sale prices, but Costco’s everyday price can’t be beat.
This was another item whose price I compared at various stores and Costco was once again the winner. The Yahoo article does mention that detergent can become less effective with time so it may not work as well after sitting next to your washing machine for months. But with a family of five we do plenty of laundry and I don’t even think about that.
Once again, you might be able to find a killer sale and combine that with a coupon to get a price that beats Costco. But in my experience, paper plates, napkins, solo cups, etc. are all cheaper at Costco.
What about you? Are there any items that you just refuse to buy at Costco or other warehouse clubs?
