A recent checkup at my doctor’s office made me realize that I need to make some changes to my lifestyle. My weight was up a bit from the previous year and so was my cholesterol and triglycerides. While the numbers weren’t alarming I am a little concerned that they’re headed in the wrong direction, especially since I have a history of heart disease in my family.
So I’ve decided to start exercising more and eating more healthy foods. Truthfully, my family already eats pretty well. We cook fresh meals most nights and try to limit processed foods as much as possible. But there is always room for improvement, so when I had an opportunity to get a free copy of Go Fresh in an exchange for an honest review on Blogging for Books, it was a no-brainer.
Go Fresh is a heart-healthy cookbook published by the American Heart Association. It’s full of shopping tips for finding the best fresh foods available as well as storage tips so you make sure your food keeps as long as possible. It also has 250 recipes for healthy meals that can be whipped up in less than an hour.
This excerpt from the introduction explains the goal of the book perfectly:
If you’re looking to move away from heavily processed foods that rely on preservatives, salt, and sugar and to take advantage of nature’s bounty of flavor and nutrition, this is the book for you. We’ll show you how to easily combine fresh ingredients with fast cooking techniques to create delicious and healthy meals.
There are chapters for Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Seafood, Poultry, Meats, Sauces, Desserts and more. They’re all designed to be cooked with fresh, unprocessed foods and the combined prep and cooking time is always under an hour.
We’ve only had a chance to try one recipe so far (Broccolini with Toasted Walnuts) but there are plenty others that I’m planning to try. The Espresso-Rubbed Flank Steak will likely be the next one we try!
If I have one complaint it is the shortage of pictures. There are 16 pages of full-color photos and they make you want to reach in and grab the food right of the page! But so many of the recipes have no photos at all and that’s disappointing.
But all in all this is a great cookbook and I’m really happy that I added to our bookshelf.
