In December our hot water heater started leaking all over the place. It was an older heater and it had finally had enough. We had to call a plumber to install a new one for us.
In January, our refrigerator died. We tried calling a repairman to fix it but even after he replaced three parts and spent a total of seven hours working on it the fridge was in no better shape than when he started, so we decided to cut our losses and get a new one.
Later that month, one of the kitchen lights went out. I thought it was just a bulb but we tried a new bulb and it still didn’t work. I tried the old bulb in another light and it worked fine so I new it was the light fixture. Fortunately, I’m fairly handy so I was able to install a new one myself.
In February, our boiler started acting wacky and the upstairs heat (we have separate heating zones for the first and second floors) wouldn’t go off. No matter what I set the thermostat too it just kept roaring away and we had to sleep with the windows open one 18 degree night. That was another call for a plumber to replace a $375 part.
Now it’s March and both our washer and dryer are acting up. They’re older too so I’m not surprised, but the timing sure stinks. The washer is not spinning the clothes well and there is often a small pool of sudsy water at the bottom when the cycle has completed. And the dryer seems to be working way too hard and the other day it was on forever and didn’t go off. It seems to be stuck in an on cycle and that’s just dangerous.
So this weekend I’ll likely be making the rounds through the local appliance stores to see what kind of sales they have. I’ll also be checking out Groupon Coupons to see if they have anything I can use. They have coupons to something like 8,000 stores so the odds are good I’ll be able to find something I can use at either Home Depot or Sears. And you don’t even have to purchase anything to use them..it’s just a free database of coupons anyone can use.
Of course, the most difficult part of shopping for appliance is finding one that my wife and I can agree on. 🙂
If you’ve bought a washer and/or dryer recently, what kind did you get?
