I’m looking out the window and seeing a mixture of freezing rain and ice and there’s no sign of sun in the forecast. And even though the polar vortex is over for now, there is talk that it could be returning soon. The national weather map to the left shows that most of the country is downright cold as winter marches on…just look at Minnesota!
So instead of braving the cold, this could be the perfect time to sit back with a cup of hot chocolate and catch up on some reading. Below I’ve listed a few of the more interesting articles I’ve come across recently…
Joe from Retire By 40 hired me as a staff writer so I encourage you to go check out my introduction post. I’ll be contributing a couple of articles each month so make sure you subscribe to his blog too so you don’t miss anything.
A controversial article from Slate argued that dividends are evil and that companies would be better off using excess cash to buy back shares or invest back in their business. As an investor, I love stocks that pay dividends. But the author makes a strong argument that using those funds to raise employee salaries would have a much better impact on the economy.
Barbara Ehrenreich had a thought-provoking piece about poverty in the Atlantic. Some people look at the poverty problem and blame the poor for being lazy. If only they would work harder they could pull themselves up out of poverty. But Ehrenreich argues that the system is rigged against the poor and as a nation we don’t do enough to help those in need.
My online friend Alexa has been working hard to increase traffic to her blog and she’s had some great results. Check out her article to find out how’s she’s doing it.
Get Rich Slowly is asking readers how much they’re willing to spend to save a sick pet. This is definitely an emotional topic, and you can share your thoughts with them here.
