When I first told my wife I was launching a new personal finance blog called Wealthy Turtle, she looked at me like I was crazy and asked, “How the heck did you come up with that name?” You might be wondering the same thing so I figured I’d use this first post to explain where the name came from and what you can expect from this blog going forward.
You see, I wanted to start a blog that would focus on building wealth the right way. And I wanted a domain that would be short and memorable and would contain words like wealth, finance, money, etc. But coming up with a short, catchy name for a website can be an exercise in frustration. Every time you think you’ve found a great name someone else has already registered it!
Then one evening we settled down for family movie night and popped Finding Nemo into the DVD player. As we watched Marlin and Dori recover from their ordeal with the jellyfish, I had a moment of inspiration an unlikely source.
Crush is a sea turtle with the laid back and care-free attitude of a surfer, but don’t let that fool you. He’s 150 years old and has a quiet wisdom about him. His advice helps Marlin get through a difficult time and teaches him that he needs to give his son space and more freedom. I realized that Crush’s quiet confidence and wisdom was just right for the new blog that was growing in my mind.
Then I started thinking of other ways that turtle characteristics could translate to the world of personal finance. I thought about the turtle’s shell as an emergency fund to protect them in difficult times. And obviously the old saying “slow and steady wins the race” works perfectly both for
building wealth and outsmarting rabbits.
One of my children’s favorite television shows is Franklin…a sweet cartoon aimed at preschoolers which tells the tale of a young turtle and his friends. Each episode teaches a valuable lesson and that’s yet another sign that the turtle would work as a symbol for a personal finance blog.
And of course there is always the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles who are known for kicking serious butt!
What to Expect from the Wealthy Turtle
Personal finance is a pretty meaty topic. There is no shortage of topics to write about and I plan on hitting lots of them. I’ll talk about cutting expenses and saving money so you can actually have something money left for yourself at the end of the month. I’ll talk about the basics of investing, making money online, and building multiple streams of income to help supplement or even replace the income from your day job.
We’ll talk about small business issues and climbing the corporate ladder. We’ll share funny money stories in the news and look for inspiration and lessons from all sorts of unexpected places. But most of all we’ll focus on the basics of building wealth, which is actually quite simple…but not at all easy. If that doesn’t make sense now, don’t worry…it soon will. For now let’s just say that the keys to building wealth are taking action and avoiding the pitfalls and temptations that knock so many people off the road.
It will be a fun ride, so hop in and let’s roll out!

What a neat idea! I never realized how many turtles made good role models. Especially Franklin!! I love watching him with my 2 year old. Little Bear is our other favorite.
Thanks Heather! Little Bear is another of our favorites too.

Congrats on starting this new blog Mike. The design looks pretty solid and that’s awesome that the Finding Nemo turtle was your original inspiration. He was my favorite character in that movie. A turtle definitely relates to personal finance in all kinds of ways. Good luck going forward.
