I don’t know about you, but in my house the grocery bill can get pretty crazy.
We’re a family of five plus we have two pets to feed, so our food bill is one of our biggest monthly expenses.
But you’ve got to eat right? Keeping food on the table is an expense that just can’t be avoided.
But we can try to minimize our food bill, so I’m always on the lookout for new ways to save money on groceries.
One of my favorite ways to save money is by using coupon apps like Ibotta.
What is Ibotta?
Ibotta is a free coupon and cash back shopping app that works on both iPhones and Android phones.
I’m notorious for going to the supermarket and forgetting to hand the cashier my coupons. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten home and realized I still had a stack of coupons sitting in my pocket. Or sometimes I leave them at home altogether.
But with the Ibotta app I never have to worry about that again because I don’t even need to show their digital coupons to the cashier. All I need to do is take a picture of the receipt when I get home.
How Does Ibotta Work?
It’s super easy to earn cash back with Ibotta. Let’s go over the steps one at a time and you’ll see how simple it is.
Step One – Click here to download the app.
Step Two – Browse through the different stores and categories to find products you need. There are literally hundreds of products to choose from so I guarantee you will find some that fit your needs.
Below is a screenshot I took with my iPhone. Tropicana orange juice was on sale at Stop and Shop for $2.50 last week and I got a $1 back through Ibotta so I only ended up paying $1.50 for the OJ. That’s a pretty good deal!
You’ll notice that many of the deals are for specific brands, but you can also find a bunch of deals on generic products like the one above for milk.
To unlock a cash back deal, just tap the red plus button on the product description. Sometimes you have to answer a quick survey question or watch a fifteen second video ad, but it is pretty painless.
Step 3 – Hit the supermarket. All of the deals you have unlocked will be added to your Unlocked Deals page which is like a shopping list so you don’t forget anything.
Just go to any of the dozens of participating stores and do your shopping as usual.
You can even use paper coupons to stack your savings. For example, I recently got an amazing deal on guacomole.
Ibotta had a $2 cash back offer on a container of Sabra guacomole. When I got to the store it was actually on sale for exactly $2.
Even better, I had a paper coupon for another dollar off. I ended up paying $1 at the store and then received $2 back through Ibotta. In other words I got paid a dollar to bring home free guacomole. Woo Hoo!
Step 4 – Verify Your Purchases. When you get home from the supermarket, all you need to do is take a picture of the store receipt and then scan the barcodes. Within 24 hours the funds will be added to your account. In my experience it usually hits my account in an hour or less.
Once you hit $20 in savings you can request a payout. You can cash out and receive cash via Paypal or a gift card to a bunch of stores including Amazon, Starbucks, iTunes, and more.
The Final Verdict
We’ve tired out a number of coupon apps like Ibotta including Saving Star and Checkout 51. Ibotta is easily my favorite because it is so easy to use, has many products that offer cash back, and I’m able to earn money very quickly.
Here’s a quick breakdown of my earnings for just the first month of using the Ibotta app:
- Signup bonus – $10
- Two $5 referral bonuses for getting my friends to sign up – $10
- Cash back rewards on purchases – $13.75
- Total saved/earned through Ibotta in one month $33.75
Will you ever get rich using a coupon app like Ibotta?
But you can cut your grocery bill and earn some extra spending money with very little effort.
In my opinion, Ibotta is the best coupon app available and I strongly suggest you check it out now while they are still offering a $10 signup bonus to new members.
