According to the US Department of Energy, heating and cooling account for about 48 percent of energy use in a typical home. That’s a big chunk of change, so you should take every opportunity you can to reduce your heating and cooling bills.
One easy way you can do that is installing a programmable thermostat to automatically regulate the temperature in your home based on whatever schedule you set. You can have the heat turn off automatically during the day while you’re at work and have it switch back on before you get home so the house is warm and toasty when you arrive.
Lower the heat setting just one degree for eight hours and you’ll save an average of one percent on your bill. Lower it ten degrees for eight hours a day and you can save ten percent!
